Light it Red for DyslexiaMarch 27, 2019
A new direction is coming for 2019! We will be inviting people to set up their own Light it Red fundraising events in the month of October.
LIGHT IT RED FOR DYSLEXIA 2019
A record 48 locations lit up in red during October 2018 making it Light It Red’s biggest year yet!
‘Light it Red for Dyslexia’ is a volunteer initiative to light significant monuments and landmarks across Australia in the colour red for Dyslexia Awareness during the month of October.
Light it Red for Dyslexia was inspired by World Dyslexia Day, a Dyslexia Awareness event held on 15th of October in the USA. The date of the 15th was selected to represent the 1 in 5 people considered to be on the dyslexia continuum. The colour red was chosen to symbolise the dreaded RED pen often used to correct work. Students with dyslexia usually see red pen in a negative context on their school work. By reclaiming the colour red in a positive light, it is hoped to empower people with dyslexia.
In 2015, the Dyslexia Support Groups around Australia collaboratively banded together and organised, in just a few short weeks, the very first national Dyslexia Awareness campaign ‘Light it Red for Dyslexia’. Many iconic Australian buildings and monuments were illuminated in red on the 15th of October for dyslexia awareness.
The passionate support group volunteers included those from Dyslexia Support Australia, Dyslexia NSW Support Group, Dyslexia Victoria Support, Dyslexia QLD-Gold Coast Group, Dyslexia Support South Australia, Western Australia and Perth Dyslexia Support Group, Square Pegs Dyslexia Support Tasmania and Dyslexia Information for the Canberra Region-Community Group.
Light it Red for Dyslexia is now held throughout the whole month of October and is administered by Code Read Dyslexia Nework Australia Ltd, a Not-For-Profit Organisation which was formed by the volunteers of the existing Australian Facebook Dyslexia Support Groups, in an effort to increase our ability to create awareness of dyslexia, support families & individuals with dyslexia, and to formalise our ongoing work with government & educators to improve education outcomes for those with dyslexia.
Disclaimer: Code Read Dyslexia Network Australia is responsible for administering and coordinating the lighting of the structures during this event only. Any simultaneous events or gatherings held during Dyslexia Awareness Month that are organised and administered by dyslexia support or community groups, organisations or individuals
In 2018, the administration of ‘Light it Red for Dyslexia’ became the responsibility of Code Read Dyslexia Network. This event however would not be possible without the support of the many volunteers who helped to arrange various spectacular locations to be lit up in the colour red throughout Australia during October 2018, to help raise awareness of dyslexia.
"In 2015, the Dyslexia Support Groups around Australia collaboratively banded together and organised, in just a few short weeks, the very first national Dyslexia Awareness campaign ‘Light it Red for Dyslexia’. Many iconic Australian buildings and monuments were illuminated in red on the 15th of October for dyslexia awareness. This event has continued to run each year, now spanning the month of October.
In 2019 we are taking a new approach to the way Light it Red is run. We will be inviting people to set up their own Light it Red fundraising events in the month of October. Each event will have its own profile page with the ability to blog and share on social media. We will encourage events to be held in conjunction with the lighting of a building or monument.
The events that raise the most funds will receive a prize package each. We are currently finalising all the details on this campaign.
