Know the signs & where to seek help

Know the signs - Preschool

Signs of Dyslexia (often but not always)
The Preschool Years
Delayed speech & /or language development
Difficulty learning new vocabulary & concepts, such as colours & numbers
Difficulty developing rhyming skills & learning nursery rhymes
Difficulties following instructions
Mispronouncing words
Difficulty associating speech sounds with letters
Difficulty learning and remembering the names of letters
Difficulty matching words that begin with the same sound.
Family history of learning difficulties

If you suspect your preschool aged child is showing signs of dyslexia, it is recommended that you see a speech pathologist with knowledge of dyslexia. Early intervention of intensive phonological awareness support & explicit structured phonics will give your child the best start.

Know the signs - Primary school

Signs of Dyslexia (often but not always)
The Primary School Years
Poor understanding of letter sound links
Slow and inaccurate word recognition
Difficulty decoding unfamiliar words
Struggles to read, write and spell
Sometimes struggles to find the right word
Has reading avoidance strategies or school refusal
Difficulty following instructions
Struggles to remember names, dates, months or sequences
Family history of learning difficulties

The High School and Adult years
Slow and laboured reading
Struggles to comprehend written information
Suffers from anxiety related to school or schoolwork
Takes much more time to complete assignments or exams than others
Struggles to remember names, dates, months or sequences
Chooses not to read for pleasure
Has a history of literacy difficulties in school
Struggles to fill out forms or applications
Limited working memory
Disorganisation & difficulties with planning
Has family members with a diagnosis of dyslexia or other learning difficulties like ADHD
