Sarah Asome is a mum of three, including a daughter with dyslexia and dyscalculia. Sarah is a highly experienced teacher at Bentleigh West Primary School (VIC) with a passion for those who learn differently. In 2015 she was awarded ‘Outstanding Primary Teacher’ for Victoria for her services assisting students with dyslexia.
She is trained in the Multisensory Structured Language (MSL) approach and is an Associate Member of the Australian Dyslexia Association (AMADA). Currently she is delivering Professional Learning across Victoria and has presented at numerous conferences Australia wide.
Sarah appeared in “Outside The Square‘ a DVD used for professional development in relation to dyslexia and explicit literacy and language instruction. In 2017 Sarah appeared on SBS Insight ‘The Teacher Who Changed My Life” with one of her students. In her current role, as Leading Teacher Sarah has been instrumental in changing literacy instruction for all at the school.
She is involved in screening students at commencement of school and providing intervention, before they ‘fail’. Sarah also provides substantial support to dyslexia support groups. She co-founded the Not for Profit ‘MSL Club’ in 2017 providing a positive learning experience for students with dyslexia, advocacy for parents and knowledge for professionals.
We need EVERY teacher in EVERY school to be trained with the necessary skills to teach EVERY student. They ALL have the right to leave school literate and numerate, at the very least “
